Marc Bouwer

As a child, Marc Bouwer was fascinated by the movies and the beautiful women of Hollywood. Little did he know that decades later, as a celebrated American couturier, his designs would set a thousand red carpet cameras flashing.

Shortly after arriving in NYC, he met fashion legend Halston. What happened next may have been Marc's own first Hollywood moment: "I think you got something, kid!" were the legend's memorable words after seeing Marc's portfolio. On cue, Halston offered him a job, and the young designer's future began to unfold. Under Halston, Marc refined his skills, becoming a master draper. Draping soon became the hallmark of Bouwer's career — a distinction later dubbed "athletic glamour" by industry purveyors and the international press.

In the 1990s, Marc established his namesake design house with partner Paul Margolin and became one of the first eveningwear-focused designers in America. Since then, Marc's innate sensibility, keen eye, and undeniable talent have landed him on the pages of revered international fashion publications and into the hearts of the world's most glamorous and watched women. In addition to a roster of celebrated runway reviews and feature articles, Marc Bouwer Couture has graced the cover of Harper's Bazaar, Oprah, Cosmopolitan, Instyle, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Vibe Magazine, and many more.

The Marc Bouwer Couture collection is cut and made by hand, one to two pieces at a time. Both his commissioned pieces and retail collections are handled in this same traditional way. The extraordinary fabrics with which Marc creates his distinctive, form-fitting "bathing suit gowns" include uniquely modern combinations of sensuous jersey, cashmere, silk crepe, lace, and velvet with detailed beading. Marc has dubbed his designs "deceptively simple."

Bouwer is a man of principal with a rebel spirit. In 2002, Marc made fashion history when he presented a collection made completely free of animal products. PETA sponsored the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week show, and the recognition helped secure his cult following in politically correct Hollywood. Bouwer famously remarked, "Fur belongs on an animal, not on a hanger." A PETA Humanitarian Award soon followed. Oprah Winfrey's O Magazine regularly spotlights Marc's "fabulously realistic" fur on its pages.

Marc Bouwer and celebrity dressing have become practically synonymous. The parade of celebrities photographed in his gowns provide a snapshot of our glamour-driven, syndicated society of awards shows, film and television premieres, concerts, and sporting events.

Throughout his career, Marc has worked with a dream list of clientele that drives the retail market and invigorates the viability of American couture. The Marc Bouwer Couture Collection is sold at Neiman Marcus and specialty stores throughout the United States.

"These products have not been approved by the FDA, are illegal, and may be potentially harmful to unsuspecting consumers," states an FDA news release.

Undeclared Ingredients
Some of the weight loss products that the FDA is warning about claim to be "natural" or to contain only "herbal" ingredients.

But FDA tests found that the some of the products contained undeclared ingredients including sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (a drug not approved in the U.S), phenytoin (an antiseizure drug), and phenolphthalein (a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer-causing agent).

In some cases, the amount of active pharmaceutical ingredients in the products far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels, posing a health risk.

The FDA notes that sibutramine can cause high blood pressure, seizures, fast heart rate, palpitations, heart attack, or stroke. It can also interact with other drugs, and its safety hasn't been established in pregnant and lactating women, or in children younger than 16.

The FDA also points out that rimonabant, a drug which the FDA considered but didn't approve, has been associated with increased risk of depression and suicidal thoughts and has been linked to five deaths and 720 adverse reactions in Europe, where it is an approved drug, over the last two years.

FDA's Advice
If you're using any of the weight loss products that the FDA is warning about, the FDA advises you to stop taking those products and consult your health care professional immediately -- and to seek guidance from a health care professional before purchasing weight loss products.

You can also report any serious side effects or product quality problems to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting system. File a report on the FDA's web site or call 800-FDA-1088.

The FDA says it has asked for product recalls and may take further enforcement actions against the companies marketing the tainted weight loss products.

'Sopranos' actor acquitted in cop killing

Lillo Brancato Jr., an actor who appeared in "The Sopranos," was acquitted of the 2005 killing an off-duty New York City police officer but found guilty of attempted burglary.

Brancato, 32, was also acquitted of two counts of burglary, but could face three to 15 years in prison on the attempted burglary charge. He has already served three years, according to his attorney, Joseph Tacopina.

Police officer Daniel Enchautegui, 28, was killed trying to break up a burglary attempt at his neighbor's house in the Bronx in December 2005.

During the trial, Brancato said there was not a break-in. Brancato said he knew the owner of the home, and that he and friend Steven Armento, 51, were drinking at a strip club when they decided to go hunt for valium.

Brancato told the jury that the owner, a Vietnam veteran, gave him permission to come to his house and take painkillers or other pills whenever he wanted.

Brancato admitted to breaking a window at the home, but said it was strictly because he was going through intense heroin withdrawal that night and he said he was trying to wake up his friend to get the drugs.

When Brancato and Armento entered the home, the next door neighbor -- Enchautegui -- came outside to investigate.

That's when prosecutors said Armento shot the officer through the heart with his .357 Magnum.

Armento was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in November. The jury in that trial took less than six hours to convict Armento.

Enchautegui was shot in the chest by Armento when he interrupted the alleged robbery, but managed to shoot both suspects multiple times before dying.

"This jury spoke loud and clear, that Lillo had nothing to do with the murder of this police officer," Tacopina said.

Brancato appeared on six episodes of the hit HBO series "The Sopranos" as a wannabe mobster in 2000. As a teen, Brancato starred alongside actor Robert De Niro in "A Bronx Tale."

Omahyra Mota.....I Just Love Her Style

Mota was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic but moved to New York at the age of 10 with her mother, grandmother, two sisters and brother, as her mother wanted her to have a better life and study at better schools. Her mother also believed she would one day become a model and constantly urged her to send photos of herself to modelling agencies and told her every day that someday she'd be famous. She was first discovered by Boss Models at the age of 16 and has since made quite an impact on the world of modeling.

Mota has modeled for designers such as Bill Blass, Alexander McQueen, Cynthia Steffe, Fendi, Nina Ricci, Sean John, Baby Phat, Heatherette, Jean Paul Gaultier, Roca Wear, Samantha Treacy, and Jay McCarroll and has also taken part in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show of 2001. Also, she was flown in especially by Gwen Stefani for L.A.M.B.'s show during New York's 2005 Fashion Week.

She has also worked with Terry Richardson. She is known for modeling both men's and women's clothing.

Mota was voted one of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people in 2001.

Mota has had small acting roles in a few films, making her acting debut in Brett Ratner's After the Sunset and then appearing in State Property 2 in 2004. Recently, Mota has attracted some attention by landing the role of Arclight in the X-Men movie, X-Men: The Last Stand.

I just love her style and her presence on the runway!!! She is one the most popular models, especially in urban wear out today!! She has been around for along time. I love that she is able to be on both runways for women and men. Her look is soo androgynous, that she can pull the sexiness of a woman off, but also the toughness of a man as well. So she's def double booking the modeling jobs!!!Lol

Keep rocking it out momma!!!

Cavaliers-Nuggets Preview

LeBron James is playing so well that he's even drawing standing ovations during road games.

The Denver Nuggets are hoping their fans are cheering for a different reason Friday, as the Nuggets look to avoid their first back-to-back losses since acquiring Chauncey Billups when they host James' red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavs' 11-game winning streak ended Saturday night at Atlanta, but they bounced right back with a 93-70 victory over lowly Minnesota on Wednesday - their 20th in 22 games.

After James scored 32 points on 14-of-20 shooting, he left the court with Minnesota's fans standing and cheering, even though most of the crowd had departed before the end of the Timberwolves' 11th straight loss.

``You can never be prepared for something like that, being on the road,'' James said. ``It's great. ... I really appreciate it.''

Delonte West added a season-high 21 points for Cleveland (21-4), which is without center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and guard Daniel Gibson.

As Ilgauskas battles a sprained ankle and Gibson deals with a sprained toe, West has taken more shots in each of the last three games than in any other contest this season. Anderson Varejao has also stepped up, starting in place of Ilgauskas and notching his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Minnesota.

The key, though, remains James, who has been predictably prolific this season. He ranks second in the NBA with 27.3 points per game and is the only player in the league averaging more than 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists.

James has also been the catalyst as the Cavaliers have become the NBA's best defense team at 89.2 points allowed per game - fewest in the league. Cleveland coach Mike Brown said James' communication and positioning at the defensive end has been the key.

``When you've got your leader doing that type of stuff on that end of the floor,'' Brown said, ``it's very contagious.''

The arrival of Billups, meanwhile, has helped tighten up Denver's defense. The Nuggets (17-8) allowed 107.0 points per game last season - 29th in the NBA - which was a primary factor in them being eliminated from the playoffs in the first round for the fifth straight season.

This season, the Nuggets are giving up nearly nine fewer points per contest and have held opponents to 42.7 percent shooting - the league's third-best mark behind Boston and Cleveland.

The Nuggets are 16-5 since Billups returned to his hometown in a four-player trade that sent Allen Iverson to Detroit on Nov. 3. Billups is averaging 18.2 points and 7.0 assists with Denver, which hasn't lost consecutive games since Nov. 1 and 5.

The Nuggets, however, had their four-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 108-96 loss at Houston, as Billups was held to eight points and Denver played what coach George Karl called its ``worst defensive game of the year.''

Carmelo Anthony had 22 points for the Nuggets. He's scoring 21.3 points per game this season - more than four below his 2007-08 mark - but has averaged 29.3 points over his last four games while shooting 12-of-20 from 3-point range.

The Cavs have lost their last three games in Denver, the most recent a 122-100 defeat Nov. 12, 2007, but they snapped a five-game skid against the Nuggets with a 110-99 win in Cleveland on Nov. 13.

``Any time I play LeBron and we play Cleveland it's a fun game. That's the way it is, there's so much hype around the game,'' Anthony said that night.

The two stars have been good friends since both players were chosen among the top three picks of the 2003 draft.
